Why I Stopped Buying Storage and Started Building It Myself

One year ago, the idea that became Artisanal Contemplationsbegan with something considerably more modest: a plan to weave trash cans out of pine needles and document the journey here on Substack. That project has pivoted into a year of following one idea into another, discovering that the process of figuring out what I actually want to make is itself a form of creative work. This article is, in some ways, a record of that.

The root problem I wanted to solve was storage. Not in the abstract, but in specific, persistent, daily-friction storage struggles: the wrong-sized containers, the bins that don’t fit the shelf, the drawer organizers designed for some idealized kitchen that bears no resemblance to the one I actually have. Budget was a real constraint, which is partly why I thought it through carefully rather than testing options at the store and discovering too late that none of them would work. I know myself well enough to anticipate which solutions I will maintain consistently and which ones I am likely to abandon, particularly when my mental, emotional, or physical reserves are at their lowest. A storage system that only works when I am at full capacity is not a system; it is an aspiration. What I needed were solutions I could realistically sustain on my worst days, not my best ones. Nothing I found on a shelf came close to meeting that standard, so I stopped looking.

And I began thinking about making my own.

The Material Question

Once I committed to the idea of constructing my own storage rather than purchasing it, the first real question was not what to make but what to make it from. This is where frugality and practicality converge into something closer to what I’ve found is called design thinking. I considered several options, each with their own trade-offs in cost, durability, workability, and how consistently I could access the material over time. Watching enough furniture restoration and upcycling projects online has given me a reasonable sense of how materials behave under different treatments and why finishing choices matter. This shapes my thinking about cardboard’s limitations before I test any of them firsthand.

Fabric was ruled out early, both for budget reasons and because most of the storage I am planning to create is going to live in moisture-prone areas like the kitchen and bathroom. Fabric by itself is simply not a practical long term choice for those rooms. Wood was appealing for its durability, but the tools, skills, and upfront cost of materials place it further along a learning curve than I could commit to at the start of a new project direction.

Cardboard kept surfacing as the most sensible answer. Not because it was the easiest option, though that was relevant, but because it satisfied several criteria at once. It is structurally capable of bearing reasonable weight when layered and reinforced. It can be cut, scored, folded, and joined with basic tools and materials. It accepts surface treatments that change its appearance entirely. It is also a material whose supply replenishes itself through something I am already doing anyway, grocery shopping. The supply is essentially guaranteed as a byproduct of ordinary life. Not every box that comes through the door makes the cut, and part of the ongoing learning has been developing an eye for which cardboard is worth keeping based on how it was used and what it contained.

The clay sculpting tool is not doing what it was traditionally designed for here. Its flat edge turned out to be a practical substitute for a make-shift bone folder, useful for breaking down glue seams on boxes before cutting and saving considerable friction on bare hands when working through a large volume of cardboard. Sometimes the right tool for a job is simply the one that works.

Thinking About Longevity Before Picking Up the Knife

The obvious limitation of cardboard as a storage material is durability. It is not impervious to moisture, it compresses under sustained heavy weight, and an untreated surface communicates impermanence. These are real constraints, and I have not dismissed them. However, each one has a workable answer within the craft itself. Sealed and layered cardboard becomes substantially more rigid. Surface treatments, including gesso, acrylic medium, or fabric covering, can make a piece weather-resistant enough for indoor storage in normal conditions. The bookbinding tradition has understood this for centuries: a well-constructed board, properly finished, is a durable object.

Part of the ongoing process will be experimenting with what actually extends a piece’s useful life in practical terms. Moisture retention is the most significant concern for cardboard used in storage; certain epoxies and sealant coatings applied to the finished surface can address that, and I intend to test several options as the first pieces come together. Adhesive choice is another consideration I am taking seriously, since some common glues are known to attract insects over time, which is not a quality anyone wants in a kitchen storage solution. These are not problems I have yet solved; they are variables I am tracking deliberately as the project develops, and I will document what works and what does not as I find out. I do not expect cardboard storage to last decades without maintenance or eventual replacement, but neither do most of the commercial alternatives I was considering. The advantage of making something yourself is that you can repair and rebuild it when it shows wear and tear, rather than purchasing a replacement that also fails to fit correctly.

Milling Cardboard Like Lumber

The decision that has made the practical side of this project most workable was one borrowed from woodworking, a craft my father took up after retirement. Which means I have had enough proximity to the hobby as an adult to absorb its logic even without ever picking up the tools myself. Instead of treating each cardboard box as a unique object to be adapted, I cut them all down into standardized flat pieces. Woodworkers mill raw lumber into boards so that they have a consistent, predictable material to build from. The shape of the original log is irrelevant once you have the boards.

The same logic applied to cardboard means that a cereal box, a pasta box, and a shipping carton all become the same thing: a source of flat stock in several repeatable dimensions. I can layer pieces for thickness, score and fold them for structure, or join them for larger forms. When a design calls for a fold, I can reintroduce one deliberately rather than working around wherever the original box happened to crease.

This is also where my existing craft experience began feeding into the project in unexpected ways. The structural logic of bookbinding, which I researched early on as a reference point for how to build durable board covers, overlaps with the kind of layering and tension management I already understand from working with mixed media. Cross-stitch taught me precision in measuring and spacing. Clay work taught me how surface treatments change the perceived quality of a material entirely. None of these skills translated directly, but they informed how I thought about the problems.

What Comes Next

The immediate goal is functional: storage solutions sized and shaped for the actual spaces I have, not the spaces a manufacturer assumed I might have. There are still a multitude of steps between where I’m at and any working prototypes or finished pieces. As those pieces develop, I intend to document the construction process here, including what worked, what failed on the first few attempts, and what the finishing process involved.

The pine needle weaving project and the broader crafting intentions I set at the start of this journey have not been set aside. They are waiting their turn in a sequence that is now more deliberate than it was several months ago. Beginning with cardboard was the right choice not only because the material is practical but because the problem it addresses is immediate and concrete. Solving real problems with available materials is, I suspect, how most enduring craft traditions actually began.
